"I'd like to share my thoughts about a recent study involving xylitol. Firstly, it should be made clear that the subjects in the study were given 30 grams of xylitol in a drink after fasting. This is a substantial amount of xylitol, equal to 60 Zellie’s mints consumed in mere minutes. There was no causality or conclusion from this study – despite the media headlines. It is amazing how many fantastic studies have shown the benefits of xylitol over the years – one in Malawi recently where two pieces of xylitol gum daily reduced the incidence of preterm birth, and a more recent study in Japan that suggests xylitol may be useful for people undergoing chemotherapy and to help suppress tumors. Few media articles have reported any of these remarkable effects – ever. Finland has used xylitol as a public health measure – for children and pregnant women – for over 60 years. I have personally used xylitol for over 40 years (in the quantities I recommend) and so does my family – my kids and grandchildren – with fantastic results.
My oral health recommendation has been – and will continue to be – 1 to 2 grams of xylitol five times a day, after meals, for a total of between 5 to 10 grams per day.
Every human body produces 15 grams of xylitol by its own daily metabolic process, which provides us confidence that our bodies understand and recognize xylitol, unlike artificial substances or medications. There have been many studies over decades, showing the safety of xylitol that I've outlined below.
What this particular study in question shows is that 30 grams of xylitol, after a fast, in certain subjects, can activate platelets in their blood. Platelets contribute to wound healing by helping to clot blood. We do not know the general health, age, or more importantly, the oral health of the study subjects; or if they were taking medications or had recently brushed and flossed their teeth. Periodontal pathogens in gum pockets are a known high-risk factor for cardiovascular disease and, for decades, I have had concerns that individuals with periodontal gum disease can, by flossing, create a reaction in the blood that increases their risk for heart attack and stroke. The article highlights various sugar-substitutes and their use in processed and baked goods, sodas, ice cream, and more. The study discusses risks associated with excess consumption and the possible effect on individuals with health conditions or taking medications, where excess could possibly have adverse effects.
One article states clearly that, "[the study] does not show that xylitol caused a higher incidence of heart attack, stroke or death" (NBC, Mantel, 2024).
Furthermore, this single observational study had no dedicated control group. In contrast, there have been many studies showing the benefits of xylitol in small amounts and even when consumed in substantial amounts. We know that many foods, minerals, and supplements, should be taken in realistic quantities – things like salt, iron, and most vitamins. Moderation, even with healthy foods, appears to be key and excess quantities often do not yield favorable results.
Once again, I have personally experienced and recommended xylitol for four decades with consistent and positive oral and general health outcomes. I remain dedicated to sharing my knowledge about oral health and on the power of xylitol, confidently recommending (and consuming) 1 to 2 grams of xylitol five times each day, aiming for a total intake of 5 to 10 grams of xylitol ideally after meals.
I understand and appreciate the concerns from xylitol users. I hope this message helps to clarify any potential disparity between my enthusiasm for xylitol and the surprise generated by this article.
